Queen Latifah Tells HBCU Graduates To “Wear Your Crown Boldly”
Queen Latifah speaks to the 2026 Graduating class of North Carolina A&T HBCU

Grammy-winning entertainer and cultural icon Queen Latifah delivered a powerful message of self-belief, purpose and Black excellence during her commencement address at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University over the weekend, inspiring thousands of graduates as they prepared to enter a new chapter of life.

Speaking before nearly 2,000 undergraduate students inside First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, the legendary rapper, actress and entrepreneur urged graduates to embrace what she described as “delusional amounts of faith” in themselves, even when the world doesn’t yet see their vision.

Latifah reflected on her own rise from the trenches in the Brick City aka East Orange, New Jersey, sharing stories about taking multiple buses and trains into New York City as a teenager while chasing her dreams in hip-hop. She reminded students that confidence often has to come before validation.

“I had to believe in myself before anybody else did,” Queen Latifah told the crowd, urging graduates to be “delusional” when it comes to chasing their dreams and refusing to wait for outside validation of their greatness. She closed with a message rooted in confidence and pride, encouraging students to “find your crown, put it on, and rock that thing.”

The speech blended humor, motivation and personal testimony, with Latifah also speaking candidly about rejection throughout her career. She recalled being told she would never become a movie star — criticism she ultimately used as fuel while building one of entertainment’s most respected multi-hyphenate careers.

University officials announced in April that Queen Latifah would headline both undergraduate commencement ceremonies as part of North Carolina A&T’s Spring 2026 graduation celebrations.

Her appearance added another major cultural moment for the nation’s largest HBCU, continuing a long tradition of bringing influential Black leaders, innovators and entertainers to speak directly to students entering the workforce during a transformative time in culture, media and business.

Queen Latifah’s address quickly gained traction across social media and HBCU circles, with many graduates and alumni praising the speech for centering authenticity, faith and Black empowerment in a way that deeply resonated with the audience.
