NBA Trailblazer Jason Collins Passes Away
Former NBA player Jason Collins

Former NBA player and barrier-breaking sports figure Jason Collins has passed away at the age of 47 following a battle with Stage 4 glioblastoma. His passing has sent shockwaves across the basketball world and beyond, as fans, athletes, activists, and cultural leaders reflect on a legacy that transcended the game itself.

Collins made international headlines in 2013 when he publicly came out as gay in a first-person story published by Sports Illustrated, becoming the first openly gay active player in the history of the NBA and one of the first openly gay athletes competing in any major American professional sport. At a time when conversations around sexuality in professional athletics remained largely taboo, Collins’ decision marked a seismic shift in sports culture and inspired countless athletes around the world to live more openly and authentically.

Over the course of his 13-year NBA career, Collins played for several franchises including the New Jersey Nets, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies, Washington Wizards, and Brooklyn Nets. Known as a tough, intelligent defensive-minded center and respected locker room veteran, Collins built a reputation as a selfless teammate whose impact often went beyond the stat sheet. But it was his courage off the court that ultimately cemented his place in history.

In the years following his announcement, Collins became a powerful advocate for inclusion, equality, and LGBTQ+ visibility in sports. His influence helped usher in a new era where athletes increasingly felt empowered to share their identities without fear of losing their careers, endorsements, or standing within their leagues. Many current and former athletes credited Collins with helping reshape the culture of professional sports into one that was more accepting and representative of the world around it.

Just days before his passing, Collins received the inaugural Bill Walton Global Champion Award, recognizing his continued advocacy and humanitarian efforts both within and outside the sports world.

Jason Collins was also a friend of the POLARIS family. Jason along with his twin brother Jarron and the Collins family were members of the 5th avenue A.M.E. Zion Church in Troy, NY where this very network was founded. In his earlier years, Jason and Jarron would visit the Capital District during the summers and would excite fans as two twin tower 7-footers walking around Troy. His fearless journey represented resilience, authenticity, and the power of standing in your truth even when the spotlight feels unforgiving.

Jason Collins leaves behind a legacy defined not just by courage, but by change. In breaking barriers, he helped create space for future generations to move more freely, live more honestly, and compete without hiding who they are. His impact on sports, culture, and representation will continue to be felt for years to come. We extend our condolences to Jason and his family. Rest in peace.
