Feds Win Bond Appeal Against Man Cleared In Jam Master Jay Killing
Karl "Lil D" Jordan and Jam Master Jay

Federal prosecutors have successfully halted the release of the man previously convicted, and later acquitted in the 2002 murder of hip-hop icon Jam Master Jay, freezing his $1 million bond as an appeal moves forward.

Karl Jordan Jr., 42, had been on the verge of release after a Brooklyn federal judge approved bond with electronic monitoring. But prosecutors quickly appealed the decision and a judge agreed to pause his release while the case is reviewed by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

The move keeps Jordan behind bars for now, marking the latest twist in a case that has stretched more than two decades since Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell of Run-DMC, was fatally shot inside a Queens recording studio in 2002.

Jordan was originally convicted in 2024 alongside co-defendant Ronald Washington. However, in December 2025, U.S. District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall overturned Jordan’s conviction, ruling that prosecutors failed to prove a key element of their case, that the killing was tied to a drug-related conspiracy.

Despite that acquittal, Jordan has remained in custody due to separate federal drug charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

The court’s decision to freeze the bond effectively hands the government a temporary win, delaying Jordan’s release indefinitely until the appeals process plays out. Meanwhile, Washington’s conviction in the killing remains intact, and he is awaiting sentencing.
