Ryan Coogler just added another historic milestone to his already legendary career. At the 98th Academy Awards, the filmmaker took home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for his film Sinners, marking his first Academy Award win as a writer.

The victory caps off a massive run for the film, which dominated awards season and entered the Oscars with a record-breaking 16 nominations, the most ever for a single film.

Directed and written by Coogler, Sinners is a genre-bending period thriller set around a mysterious juke joint, starring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twins navigating supernatural forces and family legacy. The film’s bold storytelling and cultural depth helped it become one of the year’s most talked-about releases.

Coogler’s win is also historically significant. He becomes only the second Black writer to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, following Jordan Peele’s win for Get Out in 2018.

The night was a big one for the Sinners team overall. The film also earned Oscars for Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan), Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score, cementing it as one of the standout projects of the year.
